What is a peer-reviewed journal?
Answer
The terms peer-reviewed, refereed, juried, or scholarly are all phrases used interchangeably to describe the same type of publication. For an article to be published in these types of journals, the article must first undergo a rigorous review process. An author submits an original experiment, manuscript, or research, to the editor and/or an editorial board of a journal. The editor/editorial board then assigns selected reviewers from the author's own field of study to review the article and provide feedback. The article author will then respond to the reviewers and make revisions to the article. Once the revisions are approved, the article can then be considered for publication. Sometimes articles go through the review process multiple times before they are ready for publication. The peer review and evaluation system is intended as a safeguard for the quality of scholarly work in a specific field of study.
